Belle Chasse 70037

Hi Denny.  I am in Belle Chasse (zip 70037) about 10 mile south of New Orleans, La.  I currently have a Terk TV55 mounted in my attic but can only receive 2 HD channels at best...ch 4.1 and sometimes ch 8.1.  I often have to climb up into the attic and readjust the antenna to maintain reception.  I estimate that I am within 15 miles from the furthest TV station that I might want to receive.  I don't have any significant tall buildings, trees, or hills nearby. All of the TV stations are located north of my home. There is a Naval Air Reserve Base (airport) about 2 miles southwest of my home.  After reading about the Winegard MS2000 on your sight, I am considering purchasing one to mount outside on the rooftop (single story).  What do you suggest?
On a different note, my home is wired with RG59 coax. I have Direct TV with the high definition package. Am I loosing any picture quality with the RG59? Should I go through the painstaking trouble of rewiring with RG6? Any input is appreciated. Thanks, Mark.

Greetings Mark,
I investigated the channels at your location and found that you are absolutely right, they are all within 15 miles. However, I noticed that not all of the New Orleans channels are located in the same direction. About half are at 345 degrees and the other half are at about 16 degrees from your location. My only concern using the MS 2000 TV antenna would be preamplifier overload because of the close proximity of the channels. Every antenna preamplifier has a limit to the amount of signal input it can receive before overload occurs. You may or may not be in that situation it is really to close to call. Since the channels are in different directions and the other choice would be a conventional antenna and a rotor I would certainly try it. The worse that can happen is that it doesn't work and you have to return for a 100% credit or refund of the full purchase price.
The RG 59 should be just fine. With HDTV/digital reception it's is all or nothing. The picture quality is determined by the TV and its adjustments and the quality of the signal from the source. If you will be using a signal slitter to supply signal to more than 1 TV with the MS 2000 the power supply injector (included) must be located on the antenna side of the splitter. Your installation would be: coax from the antenna to the indoor power injector, from the power injector to the splitter, from the splitter to the TV's.

Greetings Carol,
As per our conversation here is the best TV reception equipment available. Numerious channels are available at your location using this equipment.
TV antenna:               Winegard HD 7084   view larger antenna image
antenna preamplifier     Winegard AP 8700
antenna rotor             Channel Master 9521
If you don't already have it you will also need coax cable lead in wire and rotor control wire.  We do sell coax cable cut to length with the connector ends attached.
Also check your mast pipe to see how well it is secured to the trailer. You don't want a brand new TV antenna system blowing down in the wind. If your in doubt you may want to consider new support brackets.

UPDATE:
The above recommendation is outdated. Since that time the HD Stacker antenna has been designed and is now on the market. My recommendation now would be for the HD Stacker antenna. See the

Hi Denny,
We have DISH but can only pick up one local channel with our clip on TERK. Which antenna would work best for us? We live in a 1-story home with many 30 feet trees around. Our address is __________ Pineville, LA 71360. Also, will a roof mounted antenna be enough or should it be mounted on a pole? How tall does it need to be?
Thanks,
Dana

Greetings Dana,
I examined the stations in your area and I would recommend the Winegard GS 2200 TV antenna. It's small, and quite simple to install. Your broadcast stations are from Alexandria their towers are located in a West Northwest direction from your location at a distance of 24.9 miles. The GS 2200 should provide excellent reception at your location. The GS 2200 comes with a built in preamplifier. It mounts on a standard mast pipe up to 1.5 inches O.D.

Hi Denny,
I live in Slidell, LA 70461, it’s flat but with lots of trees.  I have cable but they don’t carry some of the local stations and I would like to install an antenna.  The NBC and FOX affiliates HD signal is in the VHF range 6.1, and 8.1 most of the others are in the UHF range.  I hooked up a small inside antenna and took it upstairs and we got most of the stations.  I even got some Mississippi and Baton Rouge stations nearly 100 miles away.  I want a good antenna system.  I would like to mount something in the attic or an unobtrusive outside model.  Please advise on your recommendations.
Thanks, RD

Greetings RD,
I examined the channels in your area and have two recommendations. I recommend the Winegard MS 2000 omni directional TV antenna mounted outside above your roof line. I think the MS 2000 would provide good results mounted as described.

In the attic I recommend the Winegard HD 7080P TV antenna
and the AP 8700 antenna preamplifier. I believe this combination would probably provide the best reception out of the two choices. If you don't have room in your attic for an antenna of this size I recommend you mount outside. I think anything more compact than the HD 7080P would provide results less than acceptable in the attic.

Denny , is it possible to diplex the MS 2000? Is it effective w/o the amplification? Can it be powered thru a double pass diplexer? I have 4 DirecTV feeds coming in from the dish and would use the OTA antenna on 2 of the feeds. Is this my best option for antennas? We only have a few HD channels around here - the only one on VHF is channel 8. Would a 4228 suffice?   Zip code is 71291. That's alot of questions, I know, but trying to be succinct.
Thx much

Greetings,
The MS 2000 TV antenna can be diplexed and the preamplifier can be fed by the power from the satellite receiver. The coax would run from the antenna to a 2 way signal splitter. On the the 2 way splitter install a voltage block on one output port. From the port without the voltage block go to a diplexer that passes power on both sides from there to a diplexer at the satellite receiver that passes power on the satellite side only and from there to the antenna and satellite inputs at the receiver.
>
Back to the 2 way splitter. From the port with the voltage block go to a diplexer that passes voltage only on the satellite side and from there to a diplexer at the 2nd satellite receiver that passes voltage only on the satellite side and then to the proper inputs on the receiver. This configuration will allow power from one receiver to reach the antenna and power the preamplifier and allow power from both receivers to reach the LNB at the dish.
>
We do have everything here in stock if you need it. We don't display these items on the website to avoid confusion. The diplexers are $8.00 each the voltage block is $2.50 and can be ordered by call 1 800 528 9984 Monday - Friday 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Est.
I believe the MS 2000 is a good choice for your application. Your stations are in different directions and anything else would require rotation. The 4228 TV antenna does a pretty good job from channel 10 and up. I think it would struggle with channel 8 and it would also require rotation.

I believe the Winegard MS 2000 rotorfree TV antenna  would be a good choice. We have had good reports from customers when using the MS 2000 for digital reception. The SquareShooter TV antenna is a moderately directional antenna and may have difficulty receiving the Minden UPN channel when the antenna is aligned to receive the Shreveport channels.
